Theatre came to me as an escape from hardships I have faced as a visibly trans queer person living around people, friends and family alike, who stand ten toes down on their beliefs taught in a red state. Through this medium, I found myself in camaraderie and sanctuary, which granted me solace to build meaningful stories that allowed a release to find myself and paint the pictures I want to portray in life, both the beautiful and the ugly. The stage made me find understanding and acceptance in how different walks of life operate, which ultimately set the foundation for how I model my technical work, mirroring the same ideology.
Personal Overview
My Process
When I start designing wigs for a play or giving a first listen to music I will inevitably be choreographing, I always break things down as specifically as possible. Why are these characters singing this song? What aspects in a character’s day-to-day life affect the way they move, walk, talk, and age? What traits would be used to describe them by others in the story? How does the time period and location play a role in their mannerisms, demeanor, or style? Who would be someone they look up to, take inspiration from, or utterly despise? What elements of this person make them entirely, complexly, and uniquely themself? This very thought process is what makes me excited to do my work. It’s where I find the lifeblood in what could be monotonous and plain and spin it into gold.
